Glass Recycling

The glass volumes collected in any given week throughout the year varies from lows of 50 tonnes per week during winter months to highs building to the peak in the first week of the New Year at 110 tonnes for that week .

All the glass is delivered to the Fulton Hogan quarry at York Valley where it is crushed, screened, and mixed with quarried metal for use in roading works and projects.

Its that time again – the Nelmac Nursery staff and a team of volunteers have been working tirelessly on this summers hanging baskets. This week Nelmac staff will be spending time beautifying the streets in Motueka and next week in Nelsons turn. Keep an eye out for these bursts of colour that change the look of our town each summer.

Free-cycling – a new buzz word for Nelmac. This is our ‘pass on to the next person anything you no longer require or have an excess of‘ way of reducing waste. The board is filling up and its only been an hour.

We have been fortunate to win the Commercial section of the Tasman Nelson Environment Awards.

Our entry was based on the work on sustainability that has been undertaken by the nursery team over the last three years.

Sustainability principles have been integrated into as many areas of the nursery business as possible, developing a sustainability culture amongst staff. Our staff come up with new ideas on a weekly basis, leading to changes in practice that all help to keep us in business. A green business is a successful business.

Nelmac nursery initiatives include, ensuring that all our packaging that leaves the site is either reusable or recyclable. Water usage has been a strong focus over the last year with a considerable saving in water costs made even with an increase in production. Similarly fertiliser rates are continually being adjusted to ensure that the minimum amount of fertiliser is being used to achieve the grades desired. In the words of Mike Gafa our nursery teamleader, ‘we live and breathe sustainability in our business’.

The journey towards sustainability is ongoing but we are now well on the way.

New Bug In Town

There have been sightings in Nelson of the Large Cabbage White Butterfly. This pest differs from the smaller one (the one we all know from our cabbages), its eggs are yellow and the caterpillar, unlike the green one from the smaller butterfly is black and green and covered in fine hairs. If you see this report it to NCC.
