Native reforestation
New Zealand is a country of forests. Over generations, our native forests have been replaced with more economically relevant alternatives, primarily pinus radiata - a significant export earner.
But our native forests are making a comeback, with increased intent on rebalancing our focus towards the native. Our awareness of the consequences of an unfettered commercial forestry industry - the impact of wilding pines, and of sediment run-off on our waterways post-harvest, are encouraging a longer-term approach to forest planning, planting and management activity.
